对铜像的养护前，首先要对铜像进行除尘，一般用抹布或是软毛刷轻轻擦拭即可，如果没有铜锈，只是需要保养一下，那最好的方式就是打蜡抛光。用蜡在五六十度的温度下融化，吹风机吹干，用棉布抛光。对于生了锈的铜像相对要复杂一些。

对于长在衣服皱摺，雕刻缝隙，嵌入文字笔画之中的铜锈，还需要用小型的磨光机来处理，细心地将缝里的铜锈清理掉。铜像局部又硬又厚的锈壳，可先用剔刀（黄杨木或PV材料都可以），轻轻将表面的锈壳剔掉，尽量做到不要在铜像表面留下刀纹。
